The following is a representative sample of the hundreds of articles written for various magazines over the past 25 years.
In 2012, I co-authored a package of articles for The Nation, with Nick Turse, written as an accounting of civilian casualties in the war in Afghanistan after 2001. It included six other pieces, including those linked to here:
America’s Afghan Victims
Mass Casualty Attacks in the Afghan War
The Nation, September 18, 2013
Here’s a 2010 article from The Nation on the debate on the left, and among Democrats and liberals, about how to deal with China’s economic surge:
China in the Driver’s Seat
The Nation, September 20, 2010
In a Rolling Stone story in 2009, I described President Obama’s struggle against his own generals over Afghanistan policy:
The Generals’ Revolt
Rolling Stone, October 28, 2009
One of my favorite pieces, a groundbreaking story for Mother Jones about the terrible, lasting effects of Agent Orange in Vietnam:
Apocalypse Still
Mother Jones, January-February 2000
In 2002-2003, I wrote a series of investigative stories for The American Prospect about the coming war in Iraq, focusing on Dick Cheney, the neoconservatives, the so-called Office of Special Plans at DOD, and the role of Ahmad Chalabi of the Iraqi National Congress (INC), the neocons’ favored Iraqi oppositionist. My profile of Chalabi was perhaps the first ever written, and my stories of the Office of Special Plans broke important new ground:
Tinker, Banker, Neocon, Spy
The American Prospect, October 23, 2002
The Pentagon Muzzles the CIA
The American Prospect, November 21, 2002
Persian Gulf Or Tonkin Gulf?
The American Prospect, December 4, 2002
Humpty-Dumpty in Baghdad
The American Prospect, April 9, 2003
And, in a companion piece, Jason Vest and I coauthored a Mother Jones story on the background to the Office of Special Plans and the false intelligence that the White House used to justify war in Iraq:
The Lie Factory
Mother Jones, January-February 2004
In 2008-2009, after reporting trips to Iran, I wrote several stories about Iranian politics, the Green Movement, and U.S.-Iran relations:
Letter from Iran
The Nation, May 1-2008
Iran’s Green Wave
The Nation, July 1, 2009
[Coverage from Tehran of President Ahmadinejad’s reelection.]
Talking with Tehran
The Nation, October 26, 2009
[Reporting from Tehran and Washington on U.S.-Iran negotiations.]
In 2017, I wrote a profile of Sebastian Gorka, the rightwing Islamophobe who served as President Trump’s adviser, for Rolling Stone:
Sebastian Gorka, Phony Foreign Policy Guru
Rolling Stone, August 10, 2017
